Recent Pediatric NeuroRecovery Participant Alex Brown is doing something that’s never been done before. He’s blazing a trail for other people behind him to benefit from his actions. Alex filed a lawsuit against the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), who oversees high school sports across the state. He’s looking to spark change, wanting Pennsylvania to catch-up in the race to inclusion.
High school sophomore Alex Brown is challenging the PIAA’ definition of an athlete. Alex says: “Their definition of an athlete is someone who’s able to do it on 2 feet – not on 3 wheels. That’s going to change.” This class action lawsuit wants equal opportunity for wheelchair and para-ambulatory athletics to qualify for, and upon qualification, compete in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Track and Field Championships. The school provides him with the opportunity to compete in competitions, but now it’s up to the state to allow him to advance beyond local meets.
The hope is to inspire change.
